How to Announce a Funding Round

The number matters. Some reporters have a threshold they look for, and a round that clears it earns attention, but that's half the story.

The other half is why the company matters. So many spaces in tech are crowded now that standing out is hard, and a number alone won't do it. A strong narrative has answers to questions like these: How is this company going to change the trajectory of its space? How does it tap into the cultural zeitgeist? How will it change day-to-day reality for the people who use it?

Settle the narrative before the news

That narrative work comes before any outreach. Plenty of companies announce as they come out of stealth, with no story in circulation yet, which makes the narrative work matter even more.

Choose where it lands

For a funding announcement, an exclusive is almost always the right call, and the outlet should be aligned to the company's goals and its sector. There's more in What Is a Media Exclusive, and Why Does It Matter?
